RAT Group Achievements 2014

As 2014 comes to an end… here in the RAT Group we like to look over some of the achievements we have accomplished over the last year…

January

• Professor Gail Mountain was invited to speak at the Parliament Ageing Society and Evidence session.

• Mark Jayes awarded NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship to carry out research on mental capacity assessment of patients with communication difficulties.

February
 

• Dr Lizzie Coates attends World Summit on Healthy Ageing in Place through Technology, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
• On 16th and 17th January Dr Peter Cudd attended the Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe board meeting at AIAS Bolgna onlus.

March

• Professor Sue Mawson gives fascinating inaugural lecture about her work as a physiotherapist and her career academia.

•  Madeline Harrison was awarded a Stroke Association Postgraduate Fellowship.

April

• Lauren Powell, Jo Taylor, Lizzie Coates and Sarah Gorst  presented at the AKTIVE Conference in Leeds. 

• Professor Sue Mawson provided reflections following her trip to the International workshop on muscle synergies in Venice.

• Dr Jack Parker, Dr Rebecca Palmer and Prof Pam Enderby attended the 8^th World Congress for Neurorehabilitation in Istanbul where they presented posters and gave oral presentations.

May

• Professor Gail Mountain and Professor Mark Hawley visited Florence Clark and her team in California.

• Sid Sehgal attended Google’s first European Doctoral Workshop on Speech Technology in London.

June

• Dr Jack Parker and Dr Shatha Shibib (Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist) of the ADHD TrAC-s project attended the Janssen sponsored “Shaping Futures in ADHD” conference in Manchester. The Event was also chaired by Sheffield based Dr Val Harpin (ADHD TrAC-S project lead).                           

July

• Kat Melling, TaCT Project manager attended the mixed Methods in Research Association Conference in Boston, USA. Kat presented a paper entitled “Grounded theory and structural equation modelling: Irreconcilable differences of a match in heaven?”

• Professor Arlene Arstell and Phil Jodrell visited Copenhagen for the pre-conference to the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC).

August

Sarah Smith (then PhD student) presented at Tokyo’s XVIII ISA World Congress of Sociology.

September

• RAT and CATCH researchers attended the excellent 2014 King's Fund International Digital Health and Care Congress in September. Lizzie Coates and Olubukola Otesile presented findings from the MALT project, including thoughts on whether or not telehealth encourages or stifles self-management. Claire Bentley presented the development of an app to help people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to self-manage

• Lego workshops introduced as great way of getting clinicians on board with research.

• Dr Rebecca Palmer was awarded the Sternberg Award for Clinical innovation for getting research evidence into practice locally by the Royal College of Speech and language therapists.

October

• CATCH won the Innovation in Healthcare category at the University of Sheffield
  
  Enterprise, Innovation and Impact awards.

• Professor SueMawson and Dr Jack Parker visit industry partners, Kinematix, in Porto, Portugal.

• The BigCACTUS multi-centre RCT was launched.

 
November

RAT Group raises £508 (with gift aid) for Children in Need!

December

• RAT group researchers Claire Bentley, Dr Jack Parker and Lauren Powell conducted a workshop with 60 nursing and health visitor undergraduates at Sheffield Hallam University to introduce them to Telehealth and the issues around its implementation.

• Professor Mark Hawley attended the UK-India Workshop on Affordable Assisted Living Technologies.
