Researcher to help evaluate new Sheffield Mental Health Guide

A CATCH researcher is involved in helping to develop Sheffield’s innovative new approach to mental health guidance.

Research Scientist Dr Katherine Easton will be evaluating the new Sheffield Mental Health Guide, which launched last week. The online guide, developed by mental health charity Sheffield Flourish, provides information, guidance and support specifically designed for Sheffield users.

Katherine said, “Raising awareness of different mental health conditions is so important. We know that one in four people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime - but only 30% of people will get treatment. The more help and information that is available, the better.

“One of the most powerful parts of this new guide is the chance to read real people’s stories. Ordinary people who live with issues such as anxiety and depression have shared their experiences. We hope that by sharing stories we can normalise discussions around mental health.”

The guide will be promoted in GPs surgeries, places of worship, NHS organisations and throughout the city. The aim of the guide is also to get people to feedback what information they would like to see and suggest ideas for activities and organisations that could become part of the wider network.

The guide was developed with the help of a steering group, made up of people from the city who live with mental health conditions.

Katherine continued, “During the first year of the evaluation we will be looking at how developing the guide has impacted upon the people within the steering group – how it has impacted upon their own mental health, making connections with others and the ease of finding resources. This will obviously have an important impact upon how the guide can be further used and developed in a user friendly way.”
