Communication and Control - A Talk on Personal Experiences of AAC and Technology

This exciting talk, on Wednesday 28th February, hosted by our close collaborators Barnsley Hospital, is a unique opportunity to hear the experiences of Jamie and Colin: two of Barnsley Hospital's inspirational Assistive Technology users. Jamie and Colin were both born with life-long conditions and will describe how they use technology to improve their lives.

One Man and his Voice: Jamie, who was born with Cerebral Palsy, will describe his journey to using a communication aid and how coming to use one in his 30s changed 'literally every aspect of my life'. Jamie will describe how he uses his communication aid and its effect on his independence and opportunities, Jamie will describe how using this symbol communication aid has enabled Jamie to develop his literacy - having previously thought of himself as dyslexic.
Switching onto Independence: Colin, who has born with Glutaric Aciduria Type 1, will describe how being able to control a single switch (button) gives him access and independence in his life. Colin, who recently completed college, will describe how he uses this button to control every function of his iPhone and MacBook and how this gives him independence and control. Colin will describe his access 'journey' and how his use of switches has developed since childhood. Colin, who is now known as an expert in iOS switch access, will also give some practical hints and tips for switch access on Apple devices.
