CATCH network hear about latest Internet of Things technology from IBM

IBM spoke at the April 2016 CATCH Networking Lunch about their free Internet of Things cloud based service.
The fifth CATCH Networking Lunch was held in Mappin Hall this week where more than 30 academics, researchers and professional services staff networked and heard about the latest developments in the centre.
Peter Smith from IBM was the keynote speaker.  Peter introduced the network to an Internet of Things service called Bluemix.  Access to this service is being given to CATCH members for free for non-commercial use.  It is a programming tool that can be used to build, run, deploy and manage applications in the cloud to control, interact and take advantage of data and analytics from Internet of Things connected devices and sensors.  Bluemix can also be used to access the IBM Watson AI system.
CATCH have been given an initial 100 licenses for Bluemix. Each license will allow one person - eg student, researcher, academic - to access Bluemix and create apps for non-commercial use.  All CATCH academic members are eligible to access these licenses and more can be obtained from IBM.  Examples of how these licenses could be used include: teaching modules, student research projects, PhD research projects etc, Please contact Simon Butler if you would like to use these licenses.
CATCH intends to purchase an Internet of Things kit to install in the Home Lab that researchers and students will be able to control and interact with via the Bluemix system.  Please contact Simon Butler for more information.

Anneliese Fraser, CATCH Marketing and Communications Officer, also showed off the new CATCH website (add a link to the website) and encouraged the network to join the newly formed CATCH LinkedIn group (add a link to the LinkedIn group here).
