Telehealth and telecare teaching spreads its wings

The RAT group have expanded their remit of teaching on the emerging fields of telehealth and telecare, with a new ‘masterclass’ for medical students at the University of Sheffield.

During May researchers delivered a five week masterclass for a group of future doctors, aimed at preparing them to champion the use of technology in health and social care when they enter their professional careers.

As part of the course experts from within the telehealth and telecare fields were introduced to the students. Community Matron Sarah Wilson (from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals) spoke with the group about her experiences of championing telehealth at the frontline. The group also had demonstrations of and hands-on experience with a range of different technologies, such as alert systems and monitoring devices, from industry partners Tynetec and Bosch Healthcare. In the final week the students presented to members of the RAT group and the Telehealth and Care Technologies theme of the NIHR CLAHRC for South Yorkshire.

Telehealth and telecare have steadily grown in their presence in UK health and social care delivery in the past decade or so. Engaging pre-registration healthcare professionals is a key element of moving towards making these technologies an integral part of health and social care services of the future.

The masterclass builds upon the success of a workshop for Postgraduate nurses the group ran last November. The group will expand these sessions within the faculty, and further afield over the coming months. The classes were developed and delivered by researchers from the RAT Group, who also work within the NIHR CLAHRC for South Yorkshire technology theme – Tim Ellis (MALT project manager), Claire Bentley (Research Associate) and Cathy Soreny (Research Associate).
